We are all unique and valuable but that message is not given to our children often enough.
The entertainment industry, sports and famous people do not seem to put much effort in the good.
Apparently, oblivious of their contribution to our present problems: such as street and home violence, substance abuse, present growing culture of zero empathy...
In a society that promotes and loves jackasses, to be good is uncool, and really difficult.
Not easy to be unpopular in any age, but much more when you are a young person, you need to be courageous and have support.
I wish I could see the day that the Entertainment and Media industries decide to help our youth, their families and create the world we deserve and can have.

Why the world still allows such criminal and inhumane cruelty against children to go on.

Why normal and good men will allow this cruelty to go on? Ignorance or cruelty?
Certainly they can see their children dying and suffering? Why not stop it?

Certainly the world is guilty of letting children be abused, tortured and killed and not doing much to defend them.

This is a reality for many millions of girls, the world is guilty of letting children be abused, tortured and killed only because of their gender, it is criminal to not put an end to it.

SEXISM IS ALIVE AND WELL IN AUSTRALIA

Sexism is alive and well and in Australia this is not an isolated case.
Young people are bombarded with sex scandals, their role models are abusers or "alleged" abusers often let free with a slap in the wrist and later glorified by the media.
I invite you to collect extracts of media sex scandals reporting, put them together, watch them and tell me if you are not inciting and promoting this behavior to our young people.
I would like to thank the reporters who condemn and ridicule this type of behavior, the rest should stop excusing and glorifying it(specially SPORT). You need to understand that your reporting affects lives...specially the lives of young women and children. bate Opinion: Australia's national security is being harmed

The media very often reports bad behavior by famous people sending "sexy" messages, doing drugs, and committing sexual and physical abuses with no recrimination, consequences and ridicule making it acceptable behavior and even glorifying it.
With no or few good role models in the public eye, is very easy for young people to fall into this kind of behavior , without money and support they end up usually with no job prospects, with a drug problem , physical, emotional and sexual scars caused by them or to them, and in worst cases in jail.

Our media news is constantly giving examples of bad conduct by young boys role models and famous people without any or few consequences, what is the message to our young boys and girls?
Only this week we have the following:
"Disgraced ex-DJs boss lands $5.2m job Mark McInnes
MARK McInnes, who quit DJs over sexual harassment scandal, becomes CEO of retail company behind Just Jeans and Jay Jays."
"Ricky Nixon has been banned from representing clients for only two years after providing cocaine and had sex with a teenager, but will continue running Flying Start.
We have players gang raping women and getting away with it, scandal after scandal
Our media did report the appalling behavior of Charlie Sheen and now are saying he had his revenge and won...what are you saying to young impressionable men...
Who is managing this irresponsible behavior?
You are putting at risk your daughters, sisters, mothers, friends and also the young boys future.

Children labor, slavery and many other rights were conquered in many countries and humanity evolved.
I just hope that one day men, women and children will be treated equally in the media, school, home, work, the court of law and they can say at last discrimination has ended.

Hillary Clinton: Empower girls and women - CNN.com

Hillary Clinton: Empower girls and women - CNN.com
Give women equal rights and entire nations are more stable and secure.
"Let women work and they drive economic growth across all sectors. Send a girl to school even just for one year and her income dramatically increases for life, and her children are more likely to survive and her family more likely to be healthier for years to come. Give women equal rights and entire nations are more stable and secure. Deny women equal rights and the instability of nations is almost certain."
Clinton said the goal of empowering women and girls is a "central tenet" of American foreign policy. "Women's equality is not just a moral issue, it's not just a humanitarian issue, it is not just a fairness issue," she said, "It is a security issue, it is a prosperity issue, and it is a peace issue.
"We need to reach out to faith leaders and community leaders to change the perception and treatment of girls, and to persuade men and boys to value their sisters and their daughters, their talents and their intrinsic worth."
Washington (CNN) -- Toward the end of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's surprise appearance at the TED Women conference Wednesday, she told the story of a girl and her father in a developing country.
"This teenage girl's father expected to force her into early marriage, but she had been to school and she received a cow, perhaps through the Heifer project, to encourage her to stay in school. When her father demanded she drop out of school and get married, she said no. When he insisted, she insisted right back.
"And finally she pulled out her trump card: 'If I leave and get married, I'm taking my cow, that cow belongs to me.' So guess what. She stayed in school, she was spared an early marriage, all because her father couldn't bear to part with the cow."

Breast pain indicates possibility of cancer, study finds - Diagnostic Imaging

Breast pain indicates possibility of cancer, study finds - Diagnostic Imaging
In the controversy surrounding using breast pain as a reason for diagnostic imaging, researchers find cancers may manifest in the absence of other signs or symptoms. During a study presented Thursday at the RSNA meeting, researchers found eight of 500 women seeking breast exams for breast pain were diagnosed with breast cancer.

Breast pain is one of the most common reasons prompting a breast exam, according to Dr. Lauren Stein, from the University of Michigan, who presented the study. The reported prevalence of breast cancer in women presenting with breast pain ranges from 0% to 7%. But the literature about imaging women with breast pain is limited, hence there is some controversy regarding diagnostic imaging for breast pain.

BBC News - Database shows how bees see world in UV

BBC News - Database shows how bees see world in UV
"This research highlights that the world we see is not the physical or the 'real' world - different animals have very different senses, depending on the environment the animals operate in," said Professor Lars Chittka from Queen Mary's School of Biological and Chemical Sciences.
"Much of the coloured world that's accessible to bees and other animals with UV receptors is entirely invisible for us. In order to see that invisible part of the world, we need this special machinery."
But what is the point of such a tool beyond giving researchers an insect's view?
Professor Chittka says seeing these invisible colours may have commercial applications in the greenhouse and beyond.
"Every third bite that you consume at the dinner table is the result of insect pollinators' work. In order to utilise insects for commercial pollination purposes, we need to understand how insects see flowers.
"We need to understand what kind of a light climate we need to generate in commercial glass houses to facilitate detection of flowers by bees."

Iran hangs woman for murdering love rival | The Australian

Iran hangs woman for murdering love rival | The Australian
The London-based rights group Amnesty International on Tuesday called on Iran to halt Jahed's execution, saying "there are good reasons to suggest that she may have been wrongly convicted."
Jahed, who had a so-called "temporary" marriage with Nasser Mohammad Khani, a former striker for the Iranian national team, was convicted of stabbing to death his "permanent" wife eight years ago.
In the Shiite faith that is the majority religion in Iran, men and women can marry for an agreed period of time. Afterwards, the marriage is null and void, although it can be renewed.
Men can have up to four permanent wives, and any number of temporary wives. Women can only be married to one man at a time.
Amnesty said that in early 2008 the judiciary overturned the verdict and ordered a fresh investigation, citing "procedural flaws." However, Jahed was again sentenced to death in February 2009.
He was convicted of killing his wife eight years ago but not sentenced to death?
I feel very sad for her family and disgusted of the way women and men are treated differently when convicted of the same crime?
Where is the justice?

Dianne Brimble was drugged, coroner finds | News.com.au
Three men were charged over Ms Brimble's death, including Mark Wilhelm, in whose cabin her naked body was found and with whom she'd had sex.
A manslaughter charge against Wilhelm was dropped earlier this year but he pleaded guilty to supplying the drug to Ms Brimble.
Mr Wilhelm's sentencing judge stressed that Ms Brimble had taken the drug voluntarily and "did so under the influence of alcohol and therefore, in no way was (Wilhelm) responsible for the effects of the drug on Ms Brimble".
But Mr Brimble said today's finding - that his ex-wife unknowingly took the drug - was the one that mattered.
"History will now show the findings of the coroner should be interpreted as the truth of the matter," he said.

These criminals killed a women and their sentence did not fit the crime.
Do women statistically have equal representation in the jury? Is the selection process fair? What kind of justice does a women have in our courts today?

Discovery Halts Breast Cancer Stem Cells -- BOSTON, Nov. 26, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --
BOSTON, Nov. 26, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Breast cancer stem cells (CSCs), the aggressive cells thought to be resistant to current anti-cancer therapies and which promote metastasis, are stimulated by estrogen via a pathway that mirrors normal stem cell development. Disrupting the pathway, researchers were able to halt the expansion of breast CSCs, a finding that suggests a new drug therapy target. The study, done in mice, is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) Early Edition this week.

"A critical aspect of our work was to discover that estrogen could promote breast cancer growth by modulating the proportion of breast CSCs. Since CSCs were not directly sensitive to estrogen, it wasn't clear how estrogen could affect their numbers. However, we found that hormone-sensitive cancer cells can communicate with CSCs to regulate their numbers. By disrupting the interaction between cancer cell populations we were able to prevent tumor growth," said Charlotte Kuperwasser, Ph.D., associate professor in the anatomy and cellular biology and radiation oncology departments at Tufts University School of Medicine, and member of the genetics and cell, molecular & developmental biology program faculties at the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences at Tufts.
"Interestingly, this signaling pathway involves many of the same players that control normal stem cell biology, raising a more general possibility that CSCs in other tumors might be regulated by the mechanisms guiding normal development," said Kuperwasser.

Govt wants to stamp out forced marriage | News.com.au
Although not regarded as widespread in Australia, the problem was highlighted in two separate cases this year when courts issued orders barring girls aged 14 and 17 from being removed to an overseas destination to be married against their will.
THE federal government wants to know what more can be done to stamp out the practice of forced or servile marriage.

The government should educate people entering the country about the illegality of these practices and stronger sentences imposed to the perpetrators.

UK rape awareness survey uncovers shocking attitudes of young men | News.com.au
SHOCKING new statistics reveal nearly half of young men still think sex with women too drunk to know what is going on is not rape, Sky News reports.
And 46 percent of men aged 18 to 25 also do not consider it rape if the woman changes her mind during sex.
The survey comes as a new video to raise awareness about rape was posted on YouTube by a group of specialist support centers called The Havens.
"It's not consensual sex unless both parties agree," explained former Miss Great Britain finalist and rape victim Victoria Buglioni.
In May last year, Ms Buglioni's life changed suddenly after she was followed into the restrooms at a London nightclub.
"The man grabbed me by the hair and smashed my head against the toilet cubical wall," said the 25-year-old.
"I fought back as best as I could but I was knocked out for 27 minutes during which he continued to rape me and get what he wanted from me."
Despite CCTV evidence, no one was convicted of her rape.
Astonishingly, even if a woman says "no" from the start, 23 percent of young men still believe sex after that point does not constitute rape.

Principal Amanda Bell calls for more female headmasters at Queensland all-girls schools | Courier Mail
"Following the announcement in Brisbane this week of the appointment of yet another male principal to a major independent girls' school . . . there is cause to reflect on how this could happen and continues to happen – not because there is anything wrong with men being principals or a particular man being considered worthy – but because of the larger question of why the governing authorities of some independent girls' schools would want their principals to be anything but strong female role-models for the young women in their care," she warns in a paper.

"The reverse certainly does not happen – independent boys' schools are exclusively led by headmasters, presumably because they are seen as strong role models for their students."

Will sexual harassment at work ever be eliminated?

Will sexual harassment at work ever be eliminated?Dr Michael is spot on. Men like you should be seen in the media, the present youth role models we so often see are abusing women and lately even animals.
Emily Maguire you are so right.
It's not enough for organisations to have sexual harassment policies; they need to regularly reinforce them through training that treats sexual harassment as bullying rather than over-enthusiastic flirting, and then follow through by treating sexual harassment complaints as seriously as any other kind of workplace aggression. Meanwhile, the wider community can help by loudly supporting the courageous whistleblowers who risk vilification and career ruin by publicly exposing harassers.

There'll always be creeps and bullies, but while eliminating sexual harassment may be impossible, eliminating workplace cultures that give harassers tacit approval and silence victims is not.

Emily Maguire is a novelist and journalist.

UN names Australia as the second best place in the world to live

UN names Australia as the second best place in the world to liveI agree with their judgment.Only one question why Australia did drop out of gender equality study's top 20 and are behind 23 other countries such as Mozambique, New Zeland, the Philippines and so many others. Why?

"Australia drops out of gender equality study's top 20
The following was extracted from the ABC NEWS

"Iceland, Norway and Finland topped the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual gender gap index, while Pakistan, Chad and Yemen were bottom of the 134-nation rankings.

Australia has dropped three places since last year to come in at 23rd behind Mozambique.
New Zealand at fifth and the Philippines, at ninth, led the Asia-Pacific nations.
The report - which assesses how equitably income, resources and opportunities are distributed between the sexes - gave particular praise to the Philippines in Asia and Lesotho in Africa, which were both in the world top 10."

USA from 31st to 19th passing australia by 1.
France dropped more than 25 places to 46th, mainly because of its "poor performance" in women's political empowerment.

The report said Iceland had made new gains "because of an increase in the number of women ministers, a near gender-balanced parliament and the continued tenure of a female prime minister.

The only blemish was "a significant difference between men's and women's salaries."

Nordic countries have some of the highest labor force participation rates in the world and lowest salary gaps while "women have abundant opportunities to rise to positions of leadership," said the report."
